The Social Enterprise Mark
The Social Enterprise Mark is a new and exciting addition to the sector.
The Mark identifies organisations which meet defined criteria of what a social enterprise is, for example, allocating 50% or more of profits towards social and/or environmental benefit. Find out more at socialenterprisemark.org.uk
We announced in February that O2 is to be the first major corporate to recognise the groundbreaking new Social Enterprise Mark. More about O2's support of the Mark will follow after the summer, when O2's social enterprise package is launched.
For now we wanted to highlight a glowing example of a Mark accredited social enterprise thriving in it's area of business.
Social Enterprise Mark Case Study – GLL
Since its establishment in 1993, GLL has built an impressive reputation as a leading provider of leisure facilities in London and the South East. This reputation is based on GLL’s ability to deliver affordable high quality sport and leisure facilities as well as a progressive social and environmental ethos.
GLL was the first leisure provider to be awarded the Social Enterprise Mark, distinguishing it from purely commercial organisations and highlighting their commitment to the environment and the communities they serve.
The Social Enterprise Mark identifies organisations that meet certain criteria for social enterprise, such as allocating at least 50% of profits for social/environmental benefit in the community. The Mark is a powerful visual symbol of an organisation that is working towards social change and environmental sustainability, and lets customers know that they are committed to these goals.
Mark Sesnan, GLL's Managing Director says: ‘The Social Enterprise Mark is a strong endorsement of the fact that we are meeting our social goals and clearly distinguishes us from purely commercial enterprises. With over 20 million visits a year across London, we are committed to increasing the opportunity for all local residents to participate in affordable sport, leisure and health activities whilst developing our people and minimising our impact on the environment. As one of the largest social enterprises operating in London, GLL will raise awareness of the Mark with the many thousands of people we serve and work with every day.’
